Puppy Habits and Dog Training

I've had the pleasure the past couple of weeks to be working with an adolescent Boxer/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix that was adopted by a very patient senior woman. This boisterous boy was rescued from a shelter and is now adjusting to his new home.  He is very sweet, and very friendly with people, but he has a bit of a social issue.  When he gets excited and wants attention, he behaves just the way a 3-month-old puppy would, though he's now about 18 months old and 75 pounds of lean muscle. He jumps up, humps, paws, mouths and nips and tugs at clothing.

Which brings up a common misconception about behavior: "Oh, he'll grow out of it."  In some cases puppy behaviors do get less severe as they get older, even without intervention or training. But for most behaviors, owners need to take some kind of action to prevent their puppy from growing into a larger version with the same issues. Puppy classes, private lessons or other forms of training can help puppy parents learn the best ways to mold their puppies into good canine citizens.

There is good hope for this rescue dog. He now has a wonderful home with an owner who has the time and dedication to help him learn the manners he missed out on when he was younger. The training will involve some positive redirection, clear boundary setting and appropriate outlets (such as exercise and interactive toys) for his enthusiasm. I can't wait to see what a charming young man he'll turn into!

  4. I have been trying to train my puppy for traveling situations. I just visited my parents the other weekend and my dog did not behave very well. Obviously my parents did not mind but she defiantly needs some training. She is only 12 weeks old so she still is a little uneasy when around new people and new settings. I never even thought about including dog training as a part of my trip. I really think taking him for a run would work great. My mother runs every morning so if I took her with us one time she might get more comfortable with the atmosphere and even her! I also really like the idea of running him up and down the stairs. This is a easy technique since their are stairs in the house and this may also be another way to get him more comfortable with the new setting. Thank god I learned these techniques in puppy class.

    1. Please be aware that while exercise is important, running and repetitive stair climbing can be dangerous to a young puppy's health. Please wait until growth plates have closed (by 18 months) before engaging in these types of activities.

    2. Okay thanks Mary, I will keep that in consideration. Would you still recommend me waiting a while before taking her on a short run?

  6. Thanks for the share! I have been taking my dog to dog training here in Maryland and our trainer gave us the same exact tips! I am curious though as how you would stop your dog from play biting. Just recently my dog has started to kind of play bite, pretty much just nibbling on my hand. While I don't mind at all, I am afraid that she might do it to one of my little nephews which would be a big no no! How do I get this to stop?

  7. Excellent! it is very useful post and tips for puppy training. How to train your puppies is a question asked by almost all dog owners. It seems everyone has advice and tips, and opinions on the best way to train your puppies.

Puppies learn very fast with proper training. The primary few days at home are very important for puppies and the examples you set now will last a life span. Following these basic techniques as soon as you bring your puppy home will make sure a positive housetraining experience for you and your puppy:-

    * Ensure you give your dog lots of consideration and attention when he’s doing the right and good thing. Praise him plentifully when he’s been a good boy.

    * There is nothing intrinsically incorrect with telling your dog “no,” it’s just that it doesn’t give him sufficient information. Instead of “no,” instruct him what you want him to do.

    * Give your puppy recurrent admission to his toilet area for preventing soiling inside house. Reward the puppy for do so - give a special treat.

    * Nourish your puppy with 2 – 3 meals per day. Leave food out for 15-20 minutes then take away the leftover food. Never leave food out for puppy to eat at will. This helps you find out when she’ll have to go potty. www.dog-buy.com

  13. I am planning on getting a Great Dane puppy. I want to put it in training lessons as soon as possible. It would be hard to control a dog that big. The dog would end up dragging me down the road. How much do classes cost?
